  • With a country as vast as South Africa, it is quite tricky to decide which part to visit first. If you are interested in wildlife, scenery, history and culture, then this is the tour for you.

This self drive tour takes in the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the famous battlefields of Rorkes Drift and Isandlwana, followed by two game reserves before finishing with a stay on the coast of KwaZulu Natal. It will give you opportunites to hike, see rock art paintings, have stories of the Boer war brought alive with an incredibly knowledgeable war historian, view super wildlife and then to simply relax on the shores of Umhlanga.

Outline Itinerary

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Travelling

Depart from London Heathrow on the direct overnight service to Durban.

Days 2-3 - Cathedral Peak Nature Reserve

    Staying at: Cathedral Peak Hotel

After collecting your luggage and clearing immigration you will be met and shown to the car hire depot. Collect your rental car and make your way to the Drakensberg Mountains. Don't worry you'll be well equipped with a GPS and driving directions. Take any of the number of walks from Cathedrals Peak - we found that the rock art is in easy walking distance and so it's suitable for most abilities.

Days 4-6 - Kwazulu Natal Battlefields

Staying at: Fugitives' Drift Guest House

After breakfast, make your way to Rorke's Drift. Whilst staying at Fugitives Drift Guest House there are a number of organised tours to travel out on and we do recommend pre booking as much as possible. There are tours of the Anglo-Zulu War, the Battle of Isandlwana and the Battle of Rorke's Drift - the lodge will assist in which order to do the tours. Aside from the historical tours it is possible to do the Fugitive's Drift Trail, which is a 5 mile walk from Isandlwana to Fugitive's Drift. The terrain can be a little bumpy and may involve swimming so best be a little fit for this option. Another excursion takes place to Blood River where the Zulu's fought the Boers and now you may see 64 life sized solid bronze wagons.

Days 7-9 - Mkhuze Game Reserve

    Staying at: Ghost Mountain Inn

After breakfast you will make your way across to Mkuze for your stay at Ghost Mountain Inn. The reason we like Ghost Mountain Inn is because we like their ethos - supporting the school, concerns for the local environment as well as providing guests with memorable visits. Activities are readily available and are very varied; visit a local Zulu homestead, take a boat cruise on Lake Jozini,  hike up Ghost Mountain and learn about the Battle of Tshaneni and travel out on foot or by vehicle on the game reserve.

  • Days 10-12 - Kwazulu Natal Game Reserves

Staying at: Thula Thula Game Reserves

Today you will head south to Thula Thula Private Game Reserve for your safari experience. Offering both lodge and camp facilities you will enjoy your stay at Thula Thula Private Game Reserve. Whilst out on a game drive keep your eyes peeled for buffalo, elephant, crocodile, Zebra, hyena and much more including excellent birdlife. On one of your evenings you will be treated to a braai (BBQ) in a boma, outside dining under the stars, along with Zulu dancers from a village nearby. If you are celebrating, perhaps consider arranging a champange picnic in the bush, super romantic.

    Days 13-14 - Salt Rock

Staying at: Canelands Beach Club & Spa

After your morning game drive you will leave behind your safari experience and head to the beach to relax. Situated on the beach, Canelands is a wonderful place to reflect back on an amazing trip through KwaZulu Natal.

    Day 15 - Departure

Today you will return your rental car back to Durban Airport for your flight to London Heathrow.
