Fish River Canyon is unique in Africa. The second largest caynon in the world was carved into the earth over 500 million years ago. Whether you want to take in the staggering views or partake in a multi-day trek, your visit will be filled with awe.
Part of the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, the canyon is ~160km long, up to 27km wide, and 550m deep. Popular with hikers, photographers, and nature lovers, the time of year can create a vastly different experience. You can find a dry river bed or white water, depending on the season.
The Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail is one of the most popular in southern Africa. Taking on average 5 days to complete, the trail covers 86km along the base of the canyon. Without any facilities at all, this trail is one of the most authentic nature experiences available. If even that sounds too gentle a task, elite level athletes can take on an Ultra marathon in the canyon. For most of us though, the incredible scenery will be more than enough.
