On the remote western coastline of Namibia lies the appropriately named Skeleton Coast. Named after the 1940s book by John Henry Marsh which told the story of the ill-fated Dunedin Star, this dangerous coastline has long been a graveyard for stricken ships.
The remains on the Skeleton Coast have seen a transition over the years, from the bleached bones of whales and seals, to the rusting hulls of ships. There are hundreds of wreckages dotted along this dramatic coastline. Huge sand dunes collapse in to the crashing waves, setting an apocolyptic backdrop. The Skeleton Coast is as stunning as it is daunting.
Namibia has made a 16,000 square kilometres National Park of the area, with the riverbed areas further inland home to giraffes, lions, black rhino, baoons, and springbok. The Skeleton Coast is hard to describe - a paradox of hostility and beauty, but it is certainly something that any visitor to the region must experience.
