Lake Kivu, one of a number of huge freshwater lakes which lie along Africa's Great Rift Valley. Dominating the border between Rwanda and the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo); Lake Kivu is Rwanda’s largest lake, and the sixth largest lake in Africa.
Usually combined with the Volcanoes National Park and/or Nyungwe Forest National Park it is a fascinating place with Eucalyptus, Pine and Bananas trees lining the shoreline. There are wonderful vistas as you drive along the lake – with faded old mansions –remnants of its colonial past as a holiday destination. There are a number of international hotels on the lakeshore providing serenity and some lovely beaches on which to relax between trekkings.
