In the west of Zimbabwe lies its largest natural reserve - Hwange National Park. Founded in 1923, the park is now considered for inclusion in the 5 Nation Kavango - Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area.
The park is home to over 100 mammals including good numbers of both herbivore and their carnivorous predators. There has also been 400 bird species noted in the area. A visitor to Hwange National Park can hope to encounter lion, cheetah, leopard, hyena, and wild dog. Elephants have been enormously successful here and populations of zebra, giraffe, and wildebeest can be expected.
Birdlife at Hwange National Park is diverse. Kite, eagle, kestrel, bustard, hornbill, and hobby are a tiny selection of the species that the diverse habitats provide for.
Hwange National Park was founded in 1923. Pronounced ‘Wang-ee’, it is abundant with some 400 species of bird and 107 types of animal. The park is around two hours from the Victoria Falls making it the most accessible and ‘must see’ park for many visitors. It is home to huge herds of animals who all flock to the scarce waterholes and streams making game viewing thrilling because of the sheer numbers of wildlife.
