Taking its name from the Sabie River on the southern boundary and the Sand River flowing through the park, Sabi Sand Game Reserve is directly next to Kruger National Park and features a fabulous array of wildlife.
The collection of private game reserves covers 623km2 and shares a 50km non-fenced boundary with Kruger National Park to its east. Due to the proximity and open boundary, Sabi Sand Game Reserve boasts a very similar collection of wildlife to the world-famous Kruger. Species roaming the area include lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, rhinoceros (the Big Five), in addition to cheetah, hippopotamus, wildebeest, giraffe, hyena, and wild dog.
In total this reserve is home to 145 species of animal, 500 species of birds, 110 reptile species, and 45 species of fish.
