  • On the shores of Lake Tanganyika in the far west of Tanzania, lies a rare experience. The Mahale Mountrains National Park is only accessible via boat and all exploration takes place on foot. The reward is the largest known population of chimpanzees, who flourish in the remote and untouched environment.

First studied by researchers in 1965, the ~1,500 chimpanzees live alongside Tanzania's largest primate population in 1,600km2 of the Mahale mountains. The scenery is magnificent as the forest mountains pour down towards the white sands of the lake shore.

With any wildlife experience spotting the animals can never be guaranteed however, it would be considered extremely unlucky to not have an enchanting encounter, especially if visiting for a couple of days.
