SHAMWARI GAME RESERVE
A natural extension to a Garden Route itinerary and situated in the malaria free Eastern Cape, the award winning Shamwari Private Game Reserve is home to Africa’s Big 5 (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard).
There are 7 different lodges, all graded at 5 star level, on the private reserve.
Eagles Crag Lodge - 9 superior rooms with indoor and outdoor showers, each boasting a private deck and pool. This is one of the flagship properties and is more expensive than some of the other lodges. The decor is modern and stylish and the huge suites have large private decks and plunge pools with views of the ravine, where eagles nest. There is a spa at the lodge.
Lobengula Lodge - 5 spacious thatch suites with amazing views over the bush. There is also a premier suite that has a private pool. The lodge has a more traditional feel and with only 5 rooms is ideal for groups and families.
Long Lee Manor - 15 luxury rooms and 3 suites. Originally built in 1910, Long Lee Manor offers a distintive colonial experience set around lawns and formal gardens. There is a large swimming pool. Meals are usually served in a converted barn or in the formal dining room.
Riverdene Lodge - 9 luxury suites all set around a rim flow pool. This restored settler lodge is child friendly and has a children's co-ordinator to make their stay as fun packed as possible.
Bushmans River Lodge - a 4 bedroom lodge that is perfect for small groups of friends. The lodge enjoys stunning views of the Bushmans River.
Bayethe Lodge - 9 luxury tents (mixture of twin and double beds) with wooden floors, air conditioning and heating. The suites also include private decks with pools.
Sarili Lodge - 5 suites with a child friendly pool. Sarili Lodge is an environmentally friendly private thatch design villa that has a expansive views of the plains and over Bushmans River.
A game ranger will guide you during the morning and evening drives that take place in modern open game viewing vehicles. The game drives take palce on the private reserve and usually last for approximately 3 hours. On each game drive you stop for refreshments.
In our opinion...Shamwari has become very well known after it was featured on a celebrity reality show, Safari School. It has become synonymous with safari in the Eastern Cape. The choice of lodges means that there is something for everyone's taste. Our only reservation is the number of vehicles that can be encountered on game drives.
