The Selous Game Reserve is located in the south-east of the country and covers almost 5% of Tanzania’s total area.
It is one of the least visited and therefore least developed areas of Tanzania due to its remote location. Part of the ‘southern circuit’ of wildlife reserves, we recommend the Selous for anyone looking for a quieter area, away from the crowds of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, it is particularly suited for a safari honeymoon in Tanzania.
Named after the British explorer Frederick Courtney Selous, this reserve with its woodland, with patches of dense forest and virgin bush, is home to herds of elephant, lion, leopard, wild dogs and black rhino.
As the Selous is not a national park, there is a greater range of activities available with walking and boating safaris becoming almost as popular as vehicle trips. The boat safaris offer the opportunity to view the diverse wildlife along both the Rufiji River the largest water catchment location in the region home to sleeping hippos and crocodiles and the Ruaha River.
