Safari and Beach Holidays
A combined safari and beach holiday in africa is one of our most popular requestsIt is possible to combine a few days on safari with a stay on the beach.
The key to making this cost effective and not waste days of your precious holiday travelling is choosing which destinations to combine. Another factor is the time of year, with summer in the UK the most popular time for weddings, this means that the southern hemisphere countries such as South Africa are experiencing ‘winter’ weather. And whilst this doesn’t equate to winter weather in the UK, it does take some people by surprise. It is an excellent time for game viewing all over Africa but in South Africa, nights can be cool, even cold.
Our top recommendations for a combined safari and beach holiday in Africa would be:
South Africa and Mauritius, South Africa and Mozambique, Kenya and Mombasa Coast, Kenya and Zanzibar, Kenya and Mauritius, Tanzania and Zanzibar, Botswana and Mauritius
Mozambique is quieter than Mauritius and will suit the water sports enthusiast but is not for anyone looking for night life other than a sundowner cocktail or romantic barbeque on the beach. The hotels are more rustic in style but still very much 5* if your budget allows, with private plunge pools, butlers and the beach just inches from your private patio. The rainy season stretches from November through to February which can be very hot and humid.
Mauritius can be easily reached from Johannesburg or Nairobi. It offers sophisticated 5* hotels, night life, casinos and water sports but will also be much busier than low key Mozambique. Honeymoons in Mauritius are one of the most popular holidays and as a consequence numerous hotels have sprung up along the coast. The beaches are glorious, stretching for miles and offering all kinds of water based activities, from catamaran cruises with lunch to scuba diving. Rainfall is highest January to May.
Further up the coast the historic spice island of Zanzibar is another firm favourite for a combined safari and beach holiday. It is easy to reach with direct flights from game reserves in both Tanzania and Kenya. It is possible to be on safari in the Masai Mara in the morning and on the beach in Zanzibar in the afternoon.
Zanzibar has numerous hotels to fit every budget from thatched beach cottages to 5* all inclusive luxury. It also benefits from a wide range of excursions, so if you want a day off from relaxing on the beach, then there are boat trips to see dolphins, tours of spice farms, a visit to the old town and market and plenty more. Flights back from Zanzibar are through Nairobi to London. There are rainy seasons in Zanzibar, March to early June and then again mid October to early December, however these rains are more like short, sharp showers that clear quickly.
A safari and beach holiday in Kenya is by the far the most cost effective option, with the Indian ocean coastline just 40 minutes flight from Nairobi. There are hotels to suit every taste from exclusive boutique guest houses to large all inclusive family-friendly hotels with kid’s clubs and evening entertainment. Mombasa has been in the news over the last year for the wrong reasons. We believe it is inherently safe to visit and that the hotels take good security precautions for guests. We would have no hesitation in recommending a combination safari and beach holiday in Kenya.
Finally on our list is Botswana and Mauritius. A safari holiday in Botswana and the Victoria Falls is high on people’s wish-lists and often they would then like to spend a few days relaxing on the beach. It is possible to fly from Botswana to Mauritius via Johannesburg but the flight times are such that it requires an overnight in Johannesburg as well. If you want to ‘push the boat out’, this is a wonderful itinerary but can be costly.
