HOLIDAYS IN KWAZULU-NATAL - FOR THE REAL SOUTH AFRICA
No holiday to South Africa is complete without a visit to KwaZulu-Natal - the Zulu Kingdom, fast becoming the 'must see' area of South Africa. The region has a sub tropical climate, making it an ideal location all year round, and a particulalry good place to visit during the South African 'winter'. Expect daily highs of about 26C and little or no rainfall.
The rich culture and heritage are one of the reasons for this province's growing popularity but it also offers much more;
Hike to the San rock paintings of Ukhahlamba- Drakensberg Mountains a World Heritage site. Follow the 'Midlands Meander' route and indulge in some local produce such as wine, honey, fruit and regional arts and crafts.
Listen to tales of heroism on a Battlefields Tour
Explore the City of Durban the province's capital and home to miles of golden beaches.
Visit Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park with coral reefs,dune forests, savannas and wetlands -a World Heritage site.
Track down Africa's Big 5 and the White Rhino at Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park.
A land of mountains, rolling farm lands and bushveld, that were once the scene of some violent battles in the Anglo Zulu and Boer Wars. Durban, is a bustling port city, but is somewhat tired now, with little to offer overseas visitors. However there are several excellent hotels around the outskirts of the city and along the coast.
There are several top golf courses in the area, including Durban Country Club, host to the 2010 South African Open, and our personal favourite, Princes Grant, about an hours drive north from central Durban. Travelling south there is Selborne, once a Dairy Farm and now a verdant golf estate with a challenging course. Inland golfers should not miss the spectacular Champagne Sports Resort course, which nestles in the Drakensberg Mountains.
Further east, towards the Mozambique border there is a large wilderness area which encompasses the Greater St Lucia Wetlands, a World Heritage Site and the Hluhluwe- Umfolozi National Park. The warm Indian Ocean and pristine beaches nearby, make this an ideal place to combine a beach holiday with safari.
Travelling north from Durban, visitors can follow the Midlands Meander Route, an area dedicated to artisan style farming, arts and crafts, and hand made produce. The route stretches for about 80km towards the Drakensberg Mountains with some lovely properties offering accommodation, walking trails, trout fishing and gourmet food.
The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park has outstanding natural beauty, Africa's highest mountain range south of Kilimanjaro, a fascinating and ancient geology, some of the rarest animals in the world - and the largest, richest and most concentrated series of rock art in Africa.
In 2000 it became the fourth site in South Africa to be granted World Heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). Both the Zulu name uKhahlamba - barrier of spears - and the Afrikaans name Drakensberg - dragon mountains - fit the formidable horizon created by the range. For more than 4 000 years they were home to the indigenous San people, who created a vast body of rock art - the largest and most concentrated collection in Africa. There are some 600 sites and 35 000 individual images in the Drakensberg.
